Our 200 year old farmhouse gite is situated in a quiet rural village twixt Angouleme and Cognac in the Charente department of South-West France. The small market towns of Rouillac and Aigre are ten minutes driving distance, where good everyday supermarket shopping is available. The larger towns/cities of Angouleme, Cognac, Saintes, St. Jean D\'Angely are within 20 to 40 minutes driving distance. The coast is less than an hour\'s distance away. The river Charente is very close by where river bathing and picnic areas are numerous and boat trips can be taken at various points on the river. The airports of La Rochelle and Poitiers are within one hour's driving distance. The budget airlines of Ryanair and Flybee fly in daily from various airports in the UK. The channel ports of St. Malo, Cherborg, La Havre and those in the Calais area are easy motorway driving distance.

Description of Property

The property has been fully renovated but still retains some traditional features. The rooms are large and airy. There is a large kitchen/dining room, fully equipped with modern gas cooker, microwave oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, plenty of crockery and cooking utensils. A large dining table seats six people comfortably. The lounge is of a good size with french doors to the courtyard. It is comfortably furnished with two settees and armchairs, french and satellite TV and a radio cassette player. Various games, books etc. for all ages are provided. The two bedrooms are again roomy, one with a double bed and the other with three single beds. The beds all have English interior sprung mattresses of good quality and all linen and towels are supplied (changed weekly). There is a travel cot available for an infant which can be placed in either room. There is a modern shower room/WC with an extra large shower. The courtyard/garden is surrounded by stonewalls and stout locking gates and is private to the farmhouse,therefore, very safe for children and pets.. There is a summer kitchen/utility room within this courtyard which contains the washing machine and tumble dryer, BBQ, garden furniture, sunloungers and a boules set and footballs for the children. There is a large field at the rear of the English owners\' home (adjacent to the gite) which is kept mown for ballgames or for children to run off all their surplus energy before bedtime! For winter visitors, the gite is equipped with full oil fired central heating, for which there is a small extra charge. There is a large car park for your vehicle.

Moving to Aquitaine

Places of Interest

The prefecture town of Angouleme is a walled city and has many museums, churches and historical places of interest. This is the centre of the cartoon industry and there is a film festival each summer and a very interesting museum. It is situated on the River Charente. Cognac is the heart of the brandy industry and there are many of the famous brandy distilleries here, all of which do tours with free tastings. In the summer there are numerous jazz festivals. Saintes and St. Jean D\'Angely are intersting towns both with beautiful architecture and good shopping and restaurants. The coastal towns of Royan, Rochfort and La Rochelle are within easy driving distance and the Iles of Re and Oleron, with their beautiful beaches and good restaurants and also very accessible. Futuroscope at Poitiers is about an hour\'s drive and a very good day out for the family. Limoges is within easy reach, also the Resistance Cemetary at Chasseneul and the Village Des Martyrs at Oradour sur Glane are close by, for those interested in World War II history. The River Charente winds its way close to the property and there are numerous places for river bathing and picnics, also canooing. These inlets are very safe for children. Horseriding is five minutes away, the stables are well run and well supervised. Bird watchers will love all the fauna and flora here, so don\'t forget your binoculars! There is a swimming pool at Rouillac which has three different pools for all ages. Every 27th of the month there is the largest market of the department at Rouillac, which is a must if you are here on the date. Other markets in nearby towns take place weekly. There are several good restaurants closeby, some family run and some more upmarket for that special meal.
