Oradour Sur Glane - A memorial to the innocents
Situated in the Haute Vienne, between St-Junien and Bellac, Oradour is a village like no other. It is kept as a memorial to the horrific massacre that was visited on it and its inhabitants by a retreating German SS Panzer division. In all 642 men, women and children were killed on 10th June 1944. The men were rounded up and shot, whilst the women and children were imprisoned in the church which was then set alight. Oradour, until this time had pretty much escaped the war, but what happened that fateful day ensured that people the world over would come to know of Oradour and the crime committed against it; which was horrific even by Nazi standards.
