Places of Interest

The Creuse is one of the least populated departments in France. It is renowned for its peaceful, unspoilt countryside, dramatic landscapes and breathtaking views and lots of water, everywhere. It has rivers full of Trout, Trench, Roach, Carp, and Pike, just pick up a fishing license from your local bar tabac and get casting. Being one of the most undiscovered regions of France the roads are empty of traffic and offer the car and motorcyclist freedom to ride. Lac Vassiviere - is a man made lake of 1000 hectares where you can enjoy windsurfing, canoeing, water-skiing, sailing, boat trips, rambling, riding, cycling and of course fishing! In the summer period the beach area has lifeguards for safe bathing, volleyball and a fun park for the children. You can take a tour of the lake by boat and there is a restaurant boat where you can enjoy either lunch or dinner. The island on Vassiviere is a great place to visit with animals, an art gallery and of course beautiful views. The island itself covers 173 acres of land, formerly part of vast estates once owned by the Vassiviere family whose stately home still stands on the original site. Parc d’arbre en arbre at Vassiviere – An ariel ropes course challenge made up of 7 daring circuits including 90 games. Giant swings, tirolien zip, suspension bridges… suitable for ages 4 to adult. Well worth a visit. Oradour Sur Glane - A memorial to the innocents Situated in the Haute Vienne, between St-Junien and Bellac, Oradour is a village like no other. It is kept as a memorial to the horrific massacre that was visited on it and its inhabitants by a retreating German SS Panzer division. In all 642 men, women and children were killed on 10th June 1944. The men were rounded up and shot, whilst the women and children were imprisoned in the church which was then set alight. Oradour, until this time had pretty much escaped the war, but what happened that fateful day ensured that people the world over would come to know of Oradour and the crime committed against it; which was horrific even by Nazi standards. Gueret - The Capital of the Creuse department and great for shopping, has an indoor swimming pool and also has a lake with safe swimming, a large inflatable is placed in the lake in the summer for the children to play on for a small charge. You will also find children’s games and plenty of picnic places around the lake. You will find the wolf park and a giant maze near to the town and the Foret de Chabrieres where you can find marked walks and is popular with mountain bikers. Limoges - The Capital City of the Limousin and is in the Haute Vienne region. It is around 50km from Le Petit Lac about a 50 minute drive and where you will find the airport (Bellegarde) with daily flights from 5 UK destinations and flights to and from Paris. There is an indoor shopping centre, Centre Saint Martial, and Les Halles, is the covered market; which is a nineteenth-century iron and glass structure. The alleyways inside are full of atmosphere, noise and bustle and tempting smells of mouth-watering French food. Make sure you take a look at the buildings around Limoges as the architecture is good especially look at the train station the Gare des Benedictins and the Saint-Etienne cathedral There is also a lake for picnics or walking, the Uzurat Lake. The river Vienne flows through Limoges. At the Aquarium du Limousin you will find more than 300 species and 2500 fish, this aquarium in the heart of Limoges is definitely worth a visit.
