Betpouy Magnoac is in the Gascony region lying between the Pyrenées and the River Gironde to the north. Gascony is the home of D’Artagnan (of The Three Musketeers fame) and is also a region which was long fought over by England and France. Castles, fortified churches, ’bastide’ towns and villages dating from that time can be found all over the area. Caesars Way and the Pilgrimage Way are a testament to the time passed of Roman occupation and later, when pilgrims pass through en route for Santiago de Compostella. Towns and villages nestle amongst the fields of maize, tobacco and sunflowers in a rich, rolling landscape and, in contrast to their turbulent past, local communities now pride themselves on their Armagnac and prowess in rugby. It is the gastronomic area of France and is famed for ‘foie gras’, ‘confits’ and ‘garbure’, a meaty soup which is best enjoyed with a local red wine. There are a number of restaurants in the area and we can advise you on their location and fare. The local Ferme Auberges offer superb local traditional menus and there is a small family restaurant 100 metres away. The town of Castelnau Magnoac provides all the usual local shopping facilities. Some shops are situated around the pretty main square where a bustling market is held every Saturday. Many other towns hold markets throughout the week. There is a small supermarket at nearby Trie sur Baise. From May onwards the area offers various attractions including a Classical Music Weekend, antique and night markets as well as the local fêtes in August. Trie sur Baise holds the infamous Porcailhade and a week of entertainment and the annual racecourse meeting in August. Nearby Mirande (25kms) has an International Country and Western week in mid July and Marciac (45kms) holds an International Jazz Festival, attracting well-known artistes, in early August. Other villages and towns have their annual fêtes and Festivals throughout the summer, details of which are well publicised locally.

The self contained gite is situated in a quiet, secluded rural area of Gascony, close to all amenities. The gite is fully equipped and is ideal for 4 people, but an extra 2 can be accommodated on the convertible settee. The downstairs double bedroom with separate bathroom, shower and WC, stays cool even on the hottest day. The lounge is equipped with Satellite TV, video and offers complete relaxation. The kitchen is fully equipped with cooker, oven, kettle, toaster, iron, microwave, fridge and washing machine. The upstairs bedroom has a double bed with magnificent views to the Pyrenees. The large decked terrace offers beautiful views over the countryside, with the Pyrénées in the distance. There is plenty to do and glorious scenery abounds. The splash pool and gardens are shared with the owners, who live on the premises. BBQ and garden furniture are provided. This is a Non Smoking property and sorry, we do not advise you to bring pets. Places of Interest

Golf, fishing, skiing, paragliding, parachuting, swimming, horse riding, tennis, rafting, cycling, bird watching, painting and walking are among the many activities that can be enjoyed in the area. Locally there shady woods with several walks though the hills. Castelnau Magnoac has a small airport where flying lessons or trips can be booked. We have our own riding stables and riding can be booked in advance. Please ask for details. There are plenty of lovely places to visit in the Pyrenees, just 40 mins by car, including the Pic du Midi observatory, reached from La Mongie by cable car, Pont d’Espagne, Gavarnie and of course – Lourdes. Toulouse, Auch, Tarbes all have museums and offer an alternative for those not so nice days. We can give advise on each location depending on your requirements and we will be pleased to give further information on any of these activities.
